Salzburger Seenland, Austria

In 2008, inspired by the EU funded project Sustainable Energy Citizenship (SEC), the Regionalverband Salzburger Seenland (Regional Association of the Salzburg Lake District) with its ten communities embarked on the pathway of climate protection and sustainable energy. As a result of this project, an energy plan for the region was adopted by the regional authority and one staff member was assigned to work on its implementation. Since 2010, the region is one of the 104 Austrian climate and energy model regions, an initiative that is funded by the Austrian national government. This decision was jointly taken by the ten mayors in the region.

The region Salzburger Seenland has two objectives for their actions: 1) The region wants to become independent from fossil fuels and 2) increase energy efficiency in all sectors. The motivation for this is threefold: the region aims at 1) mitigating climate change, 2) ensuring security of supply as well as 3) price stability for the inhabitants in the region. As the region Salzburger Seenland has biomass potential as well as hydro and wind potential, the governmental energy plan foresees a renewable energy mix. Measures and initiatives have successfully reflected this diversity of resources and have built on a multi-stakeholder approach.

After some years of experience in implementing the vision of 100% RE, the region Salzburger Seenland has become a reference in the province of Salzburg serving as a role model for many other regions in the area.
